AUSTIN PROJECTS RECEIVE $2 MILLION
AUSTIN (Austin
Business Journal) – Four projects in east Austin have received a
total of $2 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and
Urban Development.
The Community
Development Block Grant Recovery funds will help create over 100
construction jobs and either create or keep another 150 permanent jobs
within the next 18 months.
Projects being
funded include:

$500,000 to
LifeWorks for the purchase of land to build a 32,000-sf resource center
to expand critical workforce, youth development, adult and youth
education and mental health services to low-income populations.
LifeWorks will close on the land this month. Groundbreaking will occur
in first quarter 2010, with opening scheduled for mid-2011.

$500,000 to
PeopleFund for the construction of the Center for Economic Opportunity.
The facility will service local small businesses and low- to
moderate-income homebuyers. The center will be at 1700 Alexander Ave.

$552,703
toward renovating the African-American cultural and heritage facility at
912 E. 11th St.
-
$250,000 for
construction of sidewalks in historically disadvantaged neighborhoods of
central east Austin. This project will create 17 full-time construction
jobs.

The remaining $200,300 will be used for
Community Development Block Grant Recovery administration.
